Almalyk

 

city in Tashkent Oblast, Uzbek SSR. Founded in 1951 as the incorporation of several existing settlements, Almalyk is located on the northern slopes of the Kuraminskii range, on the left bank of the Angren. It is 18 km south of the Akhangaran railroad station on the Tashkent-Angren branch and is the last point on the Tashkent-Almalyk highway. The population, according to the 1959 census, was 40,500; in 1969, it was 76,000. A center of nonferrous metallurgy in Uzbekistan, Almalyk has the large Lenin Mining and Metallurgical Combine. Other industry includes a heat and electric power plant, a furniture factory, an auto repair plant, and building-materials enterprises. Almalyk has a branch of the Scientific Research Institute of Nonferrous Metallurgy, a department of the Tashkent Polytechnical Institute, and a technical school of mining and metallurgy.
