In southeastern MN, southeast of Mankato; established Feb 20, 1855 (prior to statehood) from unorganized lands. Name Origin: For David Olmsted (1822-61), president of the first MN territorial legislature (1849-50) and first mayor of Saint Paul. Some claim S. Baldwin Olmstead (1810-78), a member of the territorial council (1854-55) when the county was formed

    The study was conducted in Olmsted County, MN (see sidebar, Page 2), which has a long history of collaboration with the Mayo Clinic and the National Institutes of Health.
