On the northwest coast of the Upper Peninsula of MI; established Mar 9, 1843 from Michilimacknac and Chippewa counties. Name Origin: For the Ontonagon River, which runs through it; from Ojibway onagan 'dish' or 'bowl,' from the shape of the river's mouth.
