Orant

one of the standard portrayals of the Virgin Mary in iconography. The orant is portrayed standing, with hands raised to the level of the face and palms turned toward the viewer. Orant representations go back to early Christian images of praying figures, such as those portrayed on the walls of the Roman catacombs. Orantes were depicted during the ninth to 13th centuries in monumental paintings and in the icons of Byzantium and Ancient Rus’. In the wall paintings of domed cathedrals, the orant is located on the concha of the central apse. Other saints were also depicted in the orant pose.

In his study of the iconography of a three-quarter length, late fourteenth-century panel of St Francis in the orant position (in the Princeton University Art Museum) as a type of Man of Sorrows, Mundy identifies the saint's intercessory role as a surrogate Redeemer, but he overlooks a further indication of the saint's identification with Christ: the blood that flows freely from Francis's wounds.

Williams is equally evocative in his treatment of Our Lady of the Sign, in which the Christ child sits in a medallion within Mary's breast as she raises her hands in the traditional pose of an orant. It is an image of God's hiddenness within the church and ourselves, Williams suggests, and he encourages us to search for it and trust it, no matter how it may contradict our expectations.
