(Rikuoku), the main dividing range on northern Honshu in Japan. Approximately 400 km long, the range has elevations to 2,041 m (the volcano Iwate-san). Composed primarily of granites, gneisses, and sedimentary rocks, the range has seven groups of volcanic cones, including the active volcano Bandai. It is an important climatic boundary; its eastern slopes experience summer monsoons, and its western slopes, winter monsoons with heavy precipitation. The range has broad-leaved forests, and there is mountain taiga above 500–700 m.
