In southwestern CO, north of Durango; organized as Uncompahgre County Jan 18, 1877, from San Juan County; name changed Mar 2, 1883. Name Origin: For the Ute Indian chief Ouray (1820-80), possibly 'the arrow.' He was chief of Uncompahgre Utes and signed a treaty with U.S. in 1863 as 'U-ray' or 'Arrow'; signed one in 1868 'U-re,' and later that year 'Ouray.'
