On the central southern border of MO, southeast of Springfield; organized Jan 29, 1841 from Taney County. Name Origin: For the Ozark Mountains, whose name derives from the anglicized phonetic spelling of French aux arcs or aux Arks 'in the country of the Arkansas Indians.'
