A scaled-down Pentium chip from Intel that was used to upgrade a 486 on motherboards that had the required socket.

More importantly, the new motherboard should contain a P24T socket which may be worth a great deal.
Budget permitting, perhaps the best long-range upgrade path would be to buy a 486 motherboard with a P24T socket and consider a Pentium level CPU later.
