Mini PCI Express

Mini PCI Express is a small version of the PCI Express peripheral interface for laptop computers and other portable devices. Using standard PCI Express signaling, Mini PCI Express (mPCIe) cards are designed for internal use, plugging directly into the motherboard. Introduced in 2002, Mini PCI Express is also used in compact computers where space is limited; for example, ultra-small motherboards may include a Mini PCIe slot. See PCI Express, PCI and Mini PCI.

M.2 - Next Generation Form Factor
The much smaller M.2 supersedes Mini PCI Express for solid state drives (SSDs) and other peripherals in mobile devices. M.2 supports SATA 3.0, USB 3.0 and up to four lanes of PCI Express 3.0. These SSDs (1TB and 250GB) are barely larger than a stick of chewing gum.
