PPAPI

(Pepper Plug-in API) A browser plug-in interface from Google that is more secure than the Netscape Plug-in API (NPAPI). PPAPI executes in its own process, separate from the browser's rendering engine. As of September 2015, the Chrome browser supports only PPAPI and not NPAPI. See NPAPI and Pepper Flash Player.

By porting Flash Player to PPAPI, Google's engineers were able to stuff the Adobe plug-in into a "sandbox" as robust as the one that protects Chrome itself.
