In the same sanctuary as Poseidon's temple was a small shrine to a young boy named Melikertes, who had died and turned into the marine god Palaimon. Though Aphrodite and Poseidon were special to Corinth, much as Athena was special to Athens, their status as major deities ensured that they were worshiped throughout the Empire in some fashion.
