Papeete

 

a port city on the island of Tahiti in the Society Islands; the capital of French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in Oceania. Population, 25,300 (1971). Papeete exports copra, vanilla, mother-of-pearl, and tropical fruits. Pearl diving is practiced, and there are sugar refineries and soap factories. Papeete is a tourist center.
