In central IL, east of Galesburg; organized Jan 13, 1825 from Fulton County., Name Origin: For the Peoria tribe of the Illinois nation; anglicized from French peourea, a transliteration of an Illinois word. Meaning of name is in dispute; possibly 'carriers' or 'ones who are carrying packs.'
