Periblem

in botany, one of the layers of initial meristematic cells of the root apex. From the periblem arise the cells of the primary cortex of the root and, sometimes, the cells of the root cap and protoderm, which are differentiated into the epiblem. The periblem does not appear in the shoot apex.
