: a safe alternative oxidizing reagent for measuring urinary iodine.

The stock ABTS*+ solution was prepared by mixing ABTS and potassium persulfate
solutions followed by dilution with distilled water until the absorbance of the stock solution at 735 nm was placed in between 0.7 and 1.0.
A 2 wt% aqueous solution of ammonium persulfate
(61.4 g) was then charged to the flask.
After adding 0.15 g of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate and 1.6 g of sodium persulfate
, a brown precipitate was formed.
After homogenization, the mixture is polymerized using an initiator such as a persulfate
, an azo compound, or a peroxide.
Total N was measured on unfiltered water samples by digesting the sample using the alkaline persulfate
digestion (Patton and Kryskalla 2003), converting all N forms to N[O.sub.3].
After drying, a microetch solution containing persulfate
or hydrogen peroxide- sulfuric acid is utilized.
The UV/persulfate method first uses acid to strip inorganic carbon, and then uses the combination of persulfate
reagent and heat or UV light to oxidize the remaining organic carbon to carbon dioxide.
The samples were separated on a 6% polyacrylamide gel [30% acrylamide/bis (Bio-Rad/Laboratories); 5x buffer (50 mmol/L Tris, 380 mmol/L glycerin, 2 mmol/L EDTA); 100 [micro]g/mL ammonium persulfate
; 0.85 [micro]L/mL N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine].
Usually applied in situ, chemical oxidants (such as peroxide, ozone, sodium, potassium permanganate, sodium persulfate
and sodium percarbonate) can be injected into the ground where they interact with and break down organic pollutant molecules into harmless substances like carbon dioxide and water.
