Philosophical Society of the USSR

 

a voluntary public academic organization that brings together scholarly philosophical groups and individual philosophers. The society, which was established in 1971, is under the jurisdiction of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

The function of the Philosophical Society is to promote philosophical scholarship, to further the study of scientific communism and modern scientific methodology, to enlist the cooperation of Soviet philosophers in the work of propagating Marxism-Leninism, and to establish communication with foreign philosophical societies and organizations. The society’s supreme body is the congress, which meets every five years and elects the governing board; the board meets at least once a year and elects the presidium. The society has branches and local organizations on the republic, interoblast, and oblast (or krai) level. The presidium oversees the society’s academic sections.
