Phony War

 

a term widely used for the initial period of World War II, until May 1940, a period during which the governments of France and Great Britain waged no active ground combat operations on the Western Front, even though they had declared war on fascist Germany on Sept. 3, 1939. The Phony War was broken off by the fascist German offensive in the West.
