(1) A common synonym for facsimile apparatus.

(2) A facsimile apparatus for the transmission and/or reception of stationary halftone images and the photographic recording of such images. In photojournalism, for example, such equipment is used to transmit photographs for the Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS).
