Piauí

Piauí (pyouēˈ), state (1991 pop. 2,582,137), 96,886 sq mi (250,935 sq km), NE Brazil, on the Atlantic Ocean. Teresina is the capital.

Piauí

 

a state in northeastern Brazil, in the Parnaíba River basin. Area, 250,900 sq km. Population, 1,700,000 (1970). The capital and economic center is Teresina. There is pasturing of livestock in Piauí, and manioc, rice, and sugarcane are grown. Carnauba wax is produced. Industries include food processing, textiles, and leather footwear.
