Pablo . 1881--1973, Spanish painter and sculptor, resident in France: a highly influential figure in 20th-century art and a founder, with Braque, of cubism. A prolific artist, his works include The Dwarf Dancer (1901), belonging to his blue period; the first cubist painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907); Three Dancers (1925), which appeared in the first surrealist exhibition; and Guernica (1937), inspired by an event in the Spanish Civil War
