[′mī·krə‚sel]
(cell and molecular biology)
A micronucleus within a layer of cytoplasm and a membrane.

microcell

(1) A geographic area covered by a cellular carrier, generally no more than a mile and a half in diameter. Microcells are used in cities and other densely populated venues. The smaller "picocell" reaches approximately 600 feet, whereas the traditional high-power "macrocell" tower can cover an area as large as 20 miles in diameter or more. See cellphone.

(2) (MicroCell) An indoor cellular tower from AT&T. See femtocell.

We are already using Ericsson's RBS 6402 indoor picocell in our own shops in the Netherlands, so it's great to see that it will also support advanced LTE CA capabilities with unlicensed spectrum on our network.
In these schemes, the inter macro-user interference is eliminated by the precoding matrix for macro BS and the interference suppression matrices for macro UEs, meanwhile the cross-tier interference and the inter picocell interference are mitigated by the precoding matrices of the pico BSs and the interference suppression matrices of pico UEs.
Much like a picocell, microcells provide coverage to a limited area, although over a larger range (typically three kilometers wide) and outdoors.

The solution uses an innovative, task-based hardware architecture model that enables software developed on one Transcede device to be ported to other products within the Transcede family across the full range of system platforms, including enterprise femtocell, picocell (indoor and outdoor), microcell and macrocell base stations.
Still, picocell systems bring their own challenges including "cell-edge" problems where picocell-served areas intersect with more widespread macro-cell zones.
