Pintilie, Ilie

 

Born Feb. 11, 1903, in Iaşi; died Nov. 10, 1940, in Doftana. A leader in the Rumanian workers’ movement. Member of the Communist Party of Rumania (CPR) from 1928.

The son of a worker, Pintilie began working in a railroad workshop at the age of 14. He helped organize the October General Strike of 1920. In 1932 he was elected a member of the central committee for action of the railroad workers’ union. In 1933 and 1934 he was imprisoned for his revolutionary activities. He became a member of the Central Committee of the CPR early in 1937. In September 1939, Pintilie was sentenced to three years in prison. He perished at the Doftana prison during an earthquake.
