All modern aircraft, whether equipped with traditional steam gauges, the latest in flat-panel glass displays or some combination, share the same basic pitot and static systems discussed in the December 2016 article "Pitot-Static System
Failures." These systems deliver a very slight pressure to the instruments they serve and instrument accuracy is impacted by even minor variations such as leaks, disturbed air or even partial blockage in the lines directed to instruments such as altimeter, airspeed and vertical speed.
The exact cause of this error is unclear, but basic knowledge of the BARALT's pitot-static system
tells us that the static port of the BARALT system must be experiencing an artificially high local pressure compared to the co-altitude ambient air pressure.
The copilot's PFD (answer d.) could help, but only if you're certain it has a separate pitot-static system
and its own AHRS.
But some of this data is only as good as the pitot-static system
. For this reason, thorough biennial inspections on glass airplanes are essential.
That keeps moisture from entering the lines of the pitot-static system
, which will affect readings on flight instruments like your airspeed and vertical speed indicators.
Once at the jet, ensure all snow, ice and frost are removed from wings, vertical fin, horizontal stabilizers, windscreen and around all pitot-static system
probes and ports.
It's got three independent ADHRS for attitude and heading reference, a pitot-static system
for airspeed and altitude, two alternators and three backup batteries for electricity, three GPS navigators (two can be coupled to the autopilot) and the usual complement of nav/corns and ILS systems.
The GDC74 air data computer gets plumbed into the pitot-static system
for altimetry, airspeed and other primary flight instrument data.
Glass panels aren't immune: The TV screens still use a classic pitot-static system
for airspeed, altitude and vertical speed.
While flying above an overcast layer at 40,000 feet, the pitot-static system
failed, leaving them without airspeed and altitude references.
If you truly are only lacking a bit of being IFR current or if the airplane's pitot-static system
is three months out of date, you are probably safer getting an instrument clearance than pursuing other alternatives.
For homebuilders, MountainScope can integrate with some autopilots and take Dynon and Crossbow gyro info and also tie into a pitot-static system
