Poland, Luke (Potter)

(1815–87) U.S. representative, senator; born in Westford, Vt. A brilliant, self-taught lawyer, he was a Whig Supreme Court justice in Vermont (1848–65), Republican senator (1865–67), and congressman (1867–75) who revised the statute law of the United States.
