Polygnotus

(pŏl'ĭgnō`təs), fl. c.460 B.C.–447 B.C., Greek painter, b. Thasos. He later became an Athenian citizen. He painted the Capture of Troy and Descent of Odysseus to Hades in the Cnidian Lesche or clubhouse at Delphi and the Fall of Troy in the Painted Porch, Athens. He is credited with having developed a series of physical attitudes to express emotion that may be reflected in vase painting of the late 5th cent. None of his works have survived.

Polygnotus

 

Born circa 510 B.C. on the island of Thasos; date of death unknown. Ancient Greek painter. Polygnotus executed wall paintings, heroic in spirit, for the Pinacotheca in Athens and for the Lesche (the recreation hall of the Cnidians) in Delphi. He also produced encaustic paintings. Polygnotus dealt with mythological and historical themes.

He says that the tragedies of his own day often are without character and that the paintings of Zeuxis, in contrast to those of Polygnotus, contain no character at all (1450a25-9).
