Poronaisk

 

(called Sikuka until 1946), a city under oblast jurisdiction; administrative center of Poronaisk Raion, Sakhalin Oblast, RSFSR. Port at the mouth of the Poronai River on Terpenie Gulf of the Sea of Okhotsk. Railroad station 288 km north of Iuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Population 24,000 (1974). Poronaisk has paper-and-pulp and fish-processing combines, cement and building-components plants, and a mink-breeding sovkhoz.

On the same evening, a jolt with a magnitude of 4.2 was registered in the Sea of Okhotsk 250 kilometres to the south-east of the city of Poronaisk on the eastern coast of Sakhalin and 300 kilometres to the north-east of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
