Porter, John Luke

(1813–93) naval architect; born in Portsmouth, Va. He reconditioned the hull of and constructed an armored deck shield for the CSS Virginia (formerly the USS Merrimac) (1861–62). As a Confederate naval constructor (1862–65), he created plans for more than 40 ironclad or partly armored vessels.
