Pratt Institute,

at Brooklyn, N.Y.; coeducational; chartered and opened 1887. Founded by Charles Pratt as a school for practical training, it now offers general and professional studies, including programs in fine arts, art education, art history, library and information science, computer graphics, film, fashion design, interior design, industrial design, architecture, engineering, and construction management. There is also a Manhattan campus (est. 1956 as an extension of the School of Art and Design). The institute's library opened in 1896 as the first general public library in Brooklyn but was closed to the public in 1940.
