transsexualism

the belief that dislocations between sex and gender can be remedied by a surgical restructuring of the sex organs. Radical feminists have been critical of this belief and the associated practices of the ‘Transsexual Empire’. From this perspective transsexualism is primarily concerned with ‘artifactual femaleness’ and arises from an ideology fraught with normative assumptions (see J. Raymond, The Transsexual Empire, 1980).
