Price, Kenneth

Price, Kenneth,

1935–2012, American ceramic artist, b. Los Angeles, grad. Univ. of Southern California (B.F.A., 1956), New York State College of Ceramics (M.F.A., 1959). Obliterating the distinction between contemporary art and craft, Price's ceramics are usually small and abstract in form, sometimes curvingly organic, sometimes sharply geometric, in textures from smooth to rough and nearly always vividly colored. In the 1960s he became known for a series of eggs pierced with small openings from which wormlike forms emerge. He later created a series of variations on the tea cup and still later worked with larger abstract shapes often colored with layers of acrylic paint.
