A contractor having a direct contract for an entire project; the contractor may in turn assign portions of the work to subcontractors.

Prime contractor

The contractor who takes responsibility for the entire project; may build all of the project, or have subcontractors build the entire project, or may build part of it and subcontract out the rest.
