Prior, William Matthew

(1806–73) painter; born in Bath, Maine. An itinerant folk artist, he lived in Portland, Maine (1831–40), and worked throughout New England and in Baltimore, Md., before settling in Boston (1841). His skillful paintings, such as Little Girl with Big Dog (1848), are highly respected.
