It is a district administrative and commercial center with automotive vehicle works, appliance factories, and other manufacturers. There are several palaces and temples from the 17th and 18th cent., when Pune was the capital of the Marathas. Under British rule it was an important military center. (also, Poona), a city in India, in the state of Maharashtra. Located on the northwest Deccan Plateau at the confluence of the Mutha and Mula rivers. Population, 853,000 (1971).

Pune is an important junction on the highway that goes through the Borghat Pass in the Western Ghats. A large and growing industrial and commercial center, it is economically linked with Bombay. It has machine-building, textile, leather-footwear, paper, and chemical industries. There is an antibiotics factory in the suburb of Pimpri. Pune has a university, founded in 1949.
