, small region and former province, S France, bordering on Spain along the Pyrenees and on the Mediterranean, part of the administrative region of Occitania. It is now roughly coextensive with Pyrénées-Orientales dept. Perpignan is the historical capital.

a department in southern France, on the Spanish border, near the Mediterranean Sea. Area, 4,100 sq km. Population, 287,000 (1973). Its capital is Perpignan.
In 1968 some 23 percent of the department’s economically active population was employed in agriculture and 11 percent in industry. It is an important region for the cultivation of grapes, fruit, and vegetables. Livestock is raised in the mountain pastures. The department has food-processing industries and hydroelectric power plants. Along the coast are health resorts, of which the best known is St.-Cyprien.
