city (1990 pop. 15,940), surrounded by but independent of Pulaski and Montgomery counties, SW Va., on the New River; settled 1756, inc. as a city 1892. Motors, iron castings, clothing and textiles, and paper products are among the city's manufactures. Radford Univ. is there. In western VA, 14 mi. northeast of Pulaski. Name Origin: Previously called Lovely Mount, English Ferry, Ingle's Ferry, and Central Depot. Established as the town of Central City in 1885; incorporated in 1887. Name changed in 1890 to honor the original landowner, Dr. John Blair Radford; incorporated as a city in 1892
