Ranchi
(rän`chē), city (1991 pop. 614,795), capital of Jharkhand state, E central India. It is a district administrative center and a health resort, 2,128 ft (647 m) above sea level, in a region of tea plantations and rich coal deposits. There is an airport with connections to Kolkata (Calcutta) and Delhi. Ranchi
a city in India, in Bihar State; located on the Chota Nagpur Plateau, on the Subarnarekha River. Population, 256,000(1971; 106,800in 1951). Transportation center. Ranchi has a steel foundry (built with the help of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic) and a plant for the construction of heavy metallurgical equipment (built with the help of the USSR). The city is a center for shellac manufacturing.
