Raja

 

a princely title in India. It is the most common title for a chief in the Vedas and for a ruler in such ancient treatises as the dharmashastras and Arthashastra. During the period of Muslim rule, a raja was a landowning feudal lord of Hindu religion. In colonial India, “raja” was an honorary title, together with rao, rawat, rana, and talukdar, of certain large landowners.
