rate book

a book showing the names of householders, addresses, rateable values and rates payable on properties. Produced by local authorities in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, rate books are a valuable source of information on the wealth of individuals and the social structure of towns and cities in the period up to the early 20th century. Their value can be enhanced by using them in concert with the 19th-century CENSUS enumeration books.
