Reşiţa

(rĕ`shētsä), Hung. Resiczabánya, city (1990 pop. 110,519), W Romania, in the Banat, in the western foothills of the Transylvanian Alps. It is a railroad terminus and a leading Romanian mining and industrial center. The production of iron and steel, engines, and metal goods are the leading industries. Coal and manganese are mined nearby. Reşiţa was known in Roman times as a mining center for precious metals. The modern city was founded in 1768, when the first foundry was established.

a city in southwestern Rumania, capital of the judeƫ (district) of Caraş-Severin. Population, 71,500 (1973). Reşiƫa is a transportation junction. Its largest enterprise is the Reşiƫa Metallurgical Combine. The city produces heavy machinery used in electric power generation, metallurgy, metalworking, and the petroleum industry. Building materials are manufactured. Reşiƫa also has chemical and food-processing industries.

During the period between the two world wars, Oradea, together with Arad, Bucharest, Cluj, Resita and Timisoara, was on of the cities with the most advanced football in Romania.
On the one hand, there are the towns of the Banat Mountain Region (Hunedoara, Resita, Otelu Rosu and Calan), developed largely in the second half of the 19th century on the basis of the local resources (iron ores in the Poiana Rusca Mountains, bituminous coal in the Petrosani Basin and the Banat Mountains); on the other hand, new profile towns emerged (Galati, Calarasi and Targoviste) based on imports from the former Soviet space, their reason for development being the location on the lower course of the Danube (in the first two cases), and the relationship between the administrative and industrial functions (in the case of three of them), as they were given the administrative seat status also led to iron-and-steel estates being planted therein (see Figure 2).
Because of the industrial-agricultural profile of the Sasca Montana area, the population has migrated to the area's main centers: Oravita, Resita and Timisoara.
