Rietavas

 

a city in Plungė Raion, Lithuanian SSR. It is located on the upper Jūra River (Nemunas River basin) on the Kaunas-Klaipėda highway, 22 km south of the Plungė railroad station. Rietavas has a logging and timber distribution establishment. It also has enterprises producing furniture and butter. There is a sovkhoz technicum in the city.

There are few in the Czech Republic who know that in the 19th century, major contributions to Lithuanian musical life were made by two Czech musicians and pedagogues, Rudolf Liehmann (the son of Dvorak's teacher Antonin Liehmann) in Rokiskis and Josef Masek in Rietavas (there is a legend in Lithuania that it was Masek who first recognised Ciurlionis' talent.

In 1959 having graduated from Rietavas secondary school he became connected with the activities of engineer and scientist--having graduated from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (Kaunas University of Technology now), the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and acquired qualification of Mechanical Engineer (in 1964), he started working as an assistant in the Department of Strength of Materials, where during the period 1967-1970 studied the postgraduate course.
