(also Rifis), a Berber people that inhabit the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco. Population, more than 700,000 (1970 estimate). The Rifs speak a Berber language. The majority are bilingual and also speak Arabic. The Rifs are Sunni Muslims by religion. Their chief occupation is farming; wheat, corn, and other crops are grown. The Rifs waged a heroic struggle against Spanish and French colonialists for national liberation from 1921 to 1926.
a mountain chain in the Atlas Mountains, in northwestern Morocco. The Rif has a maximum elevation of 2,456 m. Composed chiefly of limestones, it is dissected by the canyons of numerous rivers. Maquis and forests of cork oak grow on the lower parts of the northern slopes; coniferous forests of arborvitae, juniper, and cedar occur at higher elevations. Fruit orchards grow on the southern slopes.
