plenum cable

(hardware)
Cable that can be (legally) installed in the plenum (the space between a ceiling and the floor above it). Such cable is (usually) teflon-coated so that it will not give off toxic fumes when burned. In some parts of the world such cable is required by law.

plenum cable

A jacket having low flame- and smoke-producing properties; specifically de-signed for use in the plenum, 1 formed by the space between a suspended ceiling and the structural floor above; such space often is used for return air in a heating and/or cooling system in a building.

Sterlite Tech launched four new products spanning fronthaul and fibre to the home (FTTH) network technologies at this year's ANGA COM in Cologne, with the unveiling of the Airblown Micro cable; Micro cable - 4mm; Micro Bullet Series Cable; and the Riser Cable.
The fourth technology -- the Riser Cable -- is intended for FTTH in a vertical run shaft or inside buildings as it meets the industry standards for fire-resistance.
The system features a main riser cable of up to 48 fibres, which can be branched to individual subscribers on different floors of an MDU, without the need for splicing of the fibre within the riser of the building.
In addition to excellent ignition resistance, low smoke generation, and high abrasion resistance, these compounds boast mechanical properties that outperform traditional compounds for flame-retardant jacketing and insulation, riser cable, industrial cable, communication cable, and FTTX applications (see table).
These materials pass the JEC 60332 test for riser cable, which is the most stringent fire test mandated in Europe, but not the NFPA plenum-cable test.
If more than seven subscribers have DSL service within the same riser cable bundle, interference from cross-talk will degrade or stop the service.
Building owners are now responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of all intrabuilding network cable, both vertical (riser cable) and horizontal (lateral cable).
VERICOM CAT5E unshielded riser cable is rated to 350 MHz, offers premium performance, footage markers for length used and length remaining and is available for immediate use in these growing market segments.
The system incorporates a main riser cable of up to 96 fibres, which can be branched to individual subscribers on different floors of the MDU directly, without the need to splice fibre within the building's riser.
A 100-pair copper riser cable, a six-fiber multimode, and a six-fiber singlemode cable are connected from each floor by the intermediate distribution frame to the computer center.
