Rivera

 

a city in northern Uruguay, on the border with Brazil, capital of Rivera Department. Population, 41,300 (1969). Rivera is the trading center for the surrounding agricultural region, which specializes mainly in animal husbandry as well as in the growing of grains, vegetables, and fruits. Textiles and tobacco items are also produced.
