There were some excellent fish including three doublefigure rays, conger eels, dogfish and rockling
First spot went to Craig Maddock with three dogfish and a rockling
for 1.52kgs, Runner-up was Neil Owen with two dogfish for 1.12kgs and in third spot was Ivor Smith with two dogfish for 1kg.
Nineteen fished last Sunday's match, with eight weighing in 15 codling, three flounder and one rockling
and Stan Preston pulling the heaviest fish; a codling at 4lb 3.5oz.
At Cold Knap it was Ann Perrett, from Newport, stepping up for first prize after she beached a cod and a rockling
that put 0.98kg on her card.
In total 18 flounder, four rockling
, a coalfish and two eelpouts where weighed in.
Davy Jones was on the pier and reeled up a 2lb 6oz cod for second place then it was Dock Beach where Jim Sexton made 1lb 1oz with his silver eel and rockling
and back to the pier for Alan Wilmott in fourth place with a 7oz whiting.
Darren Lister finished third with five rockling
and two eelpout, also from Cowbar Jetty, for 1lb 6oz, in a match fished by 14 with 10 weighing in a total of three codling, three flounder, a tadpole fish, a pouting, a sand dab, three eelpout and 15 rockling
Ivor Smith reeled in a rockling
and a whiting to take second prize with 0.28kg while all Robert Evans needed for third place was a 0.08kg rockling
There were 21 rockling
caught along with one flounder and one dab.
Ivor Smith, from Rogerstone, caught a brace of dogfish weighing 0.98kg for second place and a 0.26kg rockling
was all Neil Owen needed for third place.
FLOUNDER and rockling
are starting to figure more in catches as the winter species begin their migration away from the region's coastline.
Zac Williams claimed second prize with 4.48kg from a conger and a rockling
and Keith Skipper was third with 2.89kg.
