Established: 2000.
Location:11 miles northeast of Denver, Colorado.
Facilities:Visitor center, trails, viewing sites.
Activities:Hiking, catch-and-release fishing (during summer months), educational programs.
Special Features:In 1986, a communal roost of bald eagles was discovered on an environmental cleanup site managed by the U.S. Army and Shell Oil. The discovery of the then-endangered species led to the creation of Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR.
Habitats: 17,000 acres of native prairie, woodlots and wetlands..
Access: Weekends 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Wild life: Bald eagles and other raptors, bats, burrowing owls, pocket gopher, meadow vole, prairie dogs, deer, waterfowl, and songbirds.

In another project, Michael Hooper, a specialist in wildlife biomarker research at Texas Tech University, a part of the University of Washington center, was one of the leaders in a study of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. This study used biomonitoring of indigenous wildlife species to do two things: assess the bioavailability of the contaminants on the site and determine, in effect, how clean is clean enough when it comes to remediating a site.
