On the northern border of MN, northeast of Grand Forks, ND; established Dec 31, 1894 from Kittson County. Name Origin: For Roseau lake and river, both in the northern part of the county; from French 'reed,' from a translation of an Ojibway word that refers to the coarse grass (Phragmites communis) growing along the banks

On August 25, 2000, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) was notified by the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (MBAH) of Bacillus anthracis isolated from a steer on a farm in Roseau County, Minnesota. The infected steer was one of five dead cattle found in a pasture on August 20.
