Rovaniemi

(rô`vänē'ĕmē), city (1996 pop. 57,389), capital of Lapland prov., N Finland, at the confluence of the Ounas and Kemi rivers. Commercial and agricultural fairs and winter sports events are held in the city. Located just south of the Arctic Circle, it is the starting point of the Great Arctic Highway. Rovaniemi was chartered in 1929. Retreating German troops destroyed it (1944) in World War II. The rebuilt town features a design by Alvar AaltoAalto, Alvar

"Happiness," revealed "Santa Claus," the multilingual actor who sits on a red velvet armchair and lends an ear to all those who form a beeline to see him in an office lined with bookshelves and a mural of the map of the world in Rovaniemi. "Happiness is what is asked most of me, and that is what I wish for all peoples of the world," he said, as I took my place beside him for a coveted three minutes of a childhood relived.
VISIT AN adminstrative centre for the region and with a history stretching back to the Stone Age Rovaniemi is also considered the official home town of Santa Claus and is home to the Santa Claus Village, an amusement park and visitor attraction at the Arctic Circle.

By the riverside in Rovaniemi, an ice stairway leads you up and into the cube, which is open to the sky (framing the aurora borealis in the right conditions), It is made of 500 cubic metres of ice.
The dairy would close its operations after 29 August 2003, and as a result five employees would be made redundant, five would retire, three would be transferred to other locations within the group and six would temporarily continue to work in a dispatch centre in Rovaniemi.
