In northeastern TX, east of Tyler; organized Jan 16, 1843 from Nacogdoches County. Name Origin: For Gen. Thomas Jefferson Rusk (1803-57), chief justice of the Republic of TX supreme court (1838-42), signer of the TX Declaration of Independence (1836), and U.S. senator (1846-57)
