São João de Meriti

(souN zhwouN thĭ mərē`tĭ, də mĭrētē`), city (1990 est. pop. 508,200), Rio de Janeiro state, SE Brazil, a residential suburb northwest of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It has some light industry. Most of the labor force commutes to Rio.

São João de Meriti

 

a city in southeastern Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro State; a northwestern suburb of Rio de Janeiro. Population, 165,100 (1970). São João de Meriti is the center of an agricultural region that grows grapes and other fruits.
