a woman’s garment worn in India that consists of a straight piece of material 4.5–9 m long and 1 m wide. One end of the material is wound twice around the hips, draping the legs. The upper edge of a sari is attached to the tight belt of an underskirt and then tossed over one shoulder. In the street women usually wear this end over the head like a shawl. A short blouse with short sleeves is worn under a sari. The sari is worn somewhat differently by distinct population groups. Most often, the lower part of a sari resembles a skirt, although it sometimes resembles long or short trousers.
